Trials are an industry-standard add-on for bridal makeup, but they're also the most-questioned line item in wedding planning. Are they worth $150-$200? Here's how we think about it after 500+ LA brides.
When a trial is worth every dollar
First-time bride who hasn't worn 'bridal-level' makeup before. Going for a dramatic departure from your everyday look (no graphic eye? trial it.). Sensitive skin or a history of breakouts. Wedding outside LA where the artist team won't have your venue's lighting. Bridal party of 5+ where the trial doubles as a logistics rehearsal. Photographer with a specific style you want to optimize for. In all these cases, $200 buys you confidence, and avoids the wedding morning being the first time you see the look.
When you can skip the trial
You wear bridal-leaning makeup regularly anyway. You're booking the same artist who already does your everyday glam. You're getting a soft, natural, no-makeup-makeup look you've worn for engagement photos. The wedding is small (under 30 guests), informal, and not heavily photographed. What a trial should actually include
90 minutes minimum. Skin prep, a full face including eyes/brows/lips. Photos in both natural and flash light. Notes for the wedding morning: exact products used, exact application order. The artist should let you test wear by going about your day after the trial; come back with notes. A trial that ends in 45 minutes with no photographs and no notes isn't really a trial. It's a sample.
The hidden value of the trial
Trials test the artist as much as the look. Was she on time? Did she listen? Did she push you toward something you didn't ask for? Did she handle pushback gracefully when you wanted a softer lip? The wedding morning will magnify all of these traits. Better to discover them in a 90-minute trial than at 7am on the day with two hours until first-look photos.
